Sherwood Dungeon Pet Hack V.1.0
Actually, I’m still a little bit biased. I wanted to write this hack for two reasons. Firstly, I wanted to see what it felt like to write a game from scratch. I decided to go from nothing at all. I wanted to make a dream the normal players have, a dream I wanted to make myself. A weapon, armour, a spell… It was like a dream come true. It’s all my work, I didn’t pay anyone to create it. It’s all me.
To be honest I’ve had to justify it to myself a few times along the way. Normally, I’d build this up in my head – then I’d just sit back, relax and watch everyone’s life flash past the screen. At first it seemed like it was all good fun, but soon I’d start wondering why I did it. Perhaps when the game was complete I’d be able to watch people enjoy it all day and know that what I’d spent my time creating was worthwhile. But, on learning that the answer was no, it was a little hard to see where I was going with it. I had to stop what I was doing and rethink everything.
What I’ve discovered is that, unlike other games, you can’t hide behind a team of developers that’s worked on it for years. I’m a solo developer, and I want to create the best game I can possibly make. I know this is a bit of a philosophical approach, but it’s a founding principle of mine. As far as I’m concerned, this is where I have to go in life, in all that I do. This includes writing a game. Breaking down barriers between the author and the audience is something that I’ve always believed in.
In thinking back over life, I find that everything I’ve done and every decision I’ve made has led me to where I am now. I don’t know if that’s coincidence, destiny, or just a product of my own flawed and inconsistent thought processes. I wouldn’t change a thing and I’m proud of the dream that I was able to create in my life. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
